George Washington

George Washington, the first president of the new United States of America, had a fascinating life.  There are many sites where you can learn about him.  Let's look at a few of them.

No study of Washington is complete without learning about his home, Mount Vernon.  If you can't make it to Virginia to see it, try the excellent virtual tour at mountvernon.org.

  2. I love George Washington. I am also an expert on him. I like all of his stories but I like one more than some others , one with not as much popularity. It is about how he loved dogs. He took them to war one day and he found a lost dog on the battlefield. After the battle he wondered and wondered who it belonged to. So he looked at the collar, it was the enemy general's dog. He returned it back with his troops. Another story of his that I really like is about how he got shot sixteen times without dying. I also like how he played with his children for the rest of his life after the war.

  3. I think George Washington is one of those people who had an amazing amount of talent in many different areas. In this way he was similar to Ben Franklin and a few other very brilliant personalities in history. George Washington didn't get into science like Ben Franklin, but he did excel at just about everything he wanted to do. Nobody showed more courage than Washington - or more loyalty to the new nation. I think he qualifies as a hero in every respect.

  4. I was thinking about George Washington in connection with your poem "Ambition". George Washington declined to become king when he was offered the opportunity. And that turned out to be a good decision for America, I think. Hey Smeagul, what do you think?

  5. I think that's absolutely true. I think that’s one of the only reasons our country is a good country.

You keep choosing my favorite people. George Washington was a great leader. He may have had a more difficult time leading in today's time. He was not a great communicator (Orally or written). Communication is such an indispensable skill in today's times.

With that being said, his key talents were a keen sense of responsibility, propensity for action, awareness of the unique talents of others and how to use them, commitment to his belief system, and an ability to impose discipline on himself and others. He understood his own strengths, weaknesses, and flaws. He exploited his talents, managed his weaknesses, and avoided his flaws as much as possible. We will all achieve our personal greatness when we learn to do the same as George Washington.

  10. I like his chompers.
But, seriously, I like what came out of his mouth. He was short and to the point. My favorite story of him is when his soldiers were furious about not getting paid and he took off his glasses and said that the war had ruined the vision of them all. Then the sad soldiers were ashamed and glad at the same time to have such a great leader who could help them see the folly of their madness. Instead of rioting, they wept and kept the peace.
