James Cook once wrote that his life's goal was to journey not only "further than any man has been before me, but as far as I think it possible for man to go." When you see how far he travelled across the globe (in the map above), do you think he realized his dream?
If you were to travel to Sydney, Australia, you could visit the replica of James Cook's ship, The Endeavor, as shown in the picture below.
Instead of that long trip though, you can visit the Australian National Maritime Museum. Scroll half-way down and click on any photo to start a slide show. Do you think you would have enjoyed travelling with James Cook on some or all of his voyages?

I think he had no clue that he had reached his goal but also thought he was the best, meaning that he thought he was better than other people. I would have absolutely not have wanted to go with him.
ReplyDeleteI would have loved going with him--at least for a time. Since I was young, I always thought it would be exciting to travel on the high seas in a clipper ship. I think James Cook would have loved to have been an astronaut, if he'd lived in our day!
ReplyDeleteJames Cook was definitely a true explorer. I agree that he would be an astronaut if he were alive today. Where else could he explore that would be where no man had gone before? I think it would have been neat to arrive in those places and see things that you knew nobody at home had ever seen, and never would see. But I would hate all that boat life.
ReplyDeleteI thought the pictures of the ship were actually really nice looking. But, being a girl, I would never want to travel on a ship with a bunch of smelly men.
ReplyDeleteI wonder what part of his job he liked best. Was it the science? Was it meeting new cultures? Was it the adventure of being on the sea? I think he had to do a lot of scientific stuff because that was how he got his funding, but I'll bet it was the exploring that most interested him. He had some good experiences, but also some bad ones. He was killed in the So. Pacific on one of his voyages. Was it by cannibals? Is that how the sayings arose "Too many Cooks spoil the broth" or "having your Cook and eating it too"?
ReplyDeletep.s. I recently visited several of the islands he explored on his various voyages. He has a lot of landmarks named after him in a lot of different countries.
