KwaZulu-Natal

The Drakensberg Mountains in KwaZulu-Natal South Africa

Let's visit KwaZulu-Natal , the province of South Africa that is home to the Zulu people.

"Zulu Culture"  is a great site where you can learn all about these people.  The photographs here are wonderful, the layout is easy to use, and you can even change the size of the font to read it more easily.    For comparison, you might want to try the site  "IsiZulu".

The Mngeni River in KwaZulu-Natal

Perhaps you really would like to visit this historic land.  Take a look at the accomodations provided at the Isibudi Zulu Lodge.   The beehive suite is pretty cool.  When staying at a place like this, you are privileged to see native dances and rituals as seen in the video below.

If you enjoyed learning about Shaka and the Zulu warriors, you might like this short video of stick-fighting.

Just for fun, you can try Zulu stickfighting moves on the History Channel's "Warriors Game."

What do you find interesting about these people?
Would you enjoy visiting KwaZulu-Natal?

  1. I found it interesting that they dance with beads on their ankles. I didn’t know that they are barefoot and live in huts. I learned that they used to throw things at people in war. I think it is neat that they used stick fighting.

I think going there would be very cool. I would like to see their weapons and take some lessons in fighting. The beehive suite looks great, too, but I don't know about the food.

  3. Oh, brings back lots of memories :) Though I spent most of my time in a southern part of the Eastern Cape, I did spend a little time up in Durban, one of the main cities in KwaZulu Natal. So beautiful. Interestingly, Durban has the highest Indian population outside of India (or it did at the time anyway). So the area I was in wasn't as Zulu-concentrated, more Indian influence. Yes, I would LOVE to re-visit this part of the world, it would be a dream. And I would love to experience more of the Zulu culture as well; my time was predominantly spent with the Xhosa culture, and they don't get along very well, so I would love the Zulu experience also. Thanks for this post, I love it :)

  4. I think it would be sad to see how hard the women work. But if I went, I would like to get some of their beaded jewelry

  5. I also love seeing the women carry things on their heads, I am very impressed. I saw people carry anything from baskets of laundry, to brooms, to water...you name it, they balance it on their heads. Pretty cool!

  6. I have always wished I that part of Africa!

A good Zulu singer is Johnny Clegg. He's my favorite singer of all time. :-)

That stick-fighting was really interesting, I think it would be neat to learn how to do that, and to carry things on my head. :-)
