The Green Fiddler

Have you ever seen this painting by Marc Chagall?  It is the inspiration for the musical "Fiddler on the Roof."  Before leaving his homeland for good, the artist painted it in the auditorium of the Moscow Yiddish Theatre.  In the video below, you'll see many more of the works he finished in his long, 97-year life.  Born in 1887 and living until 1985, he saw extraordinary changes both in Russia and around the world.   His work reflects his own thoughts, feelings, dreams and hopes.  He said, "In the arts, as in life, everything is possible provided it is based on love."

What things did you notice about Chagall's art?

  2. My daughter and I had a look at the YouTube movie which is a bit too fast (for art appreciation) but really beautiful. Thank you.

  3. I agree that the movie is definitely too fast; it made us want to see more of his work slowly, so we bought an old-fashioned. . . BOOK!!!! Thanks for your comments!

  5. I have never heard of him before but the first thing I noticed is how colorful his art is. And it has a lot of things that don't make sense. But I like it.

  6. It's funny how his art looks sort of like a child did it but the longer you look at it the more detail you seek.
